Safe & Sound Hillsborough’s Executive Director Freddy Barton Joins Hundreds for National Convening of the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance
Tampa, FL – February 18, 2019 – Today, kicks off the inaugural MBK Rising, a national two-day convening of the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance where Safe & Sound Hillsborough’s Executive Director Freddy Barton has joined hundreds from across the country in Oakland, CA for an important gathering of the growing network of MBK Communities, leaders, young men of color and the organizations working hard to help them achieve their dreams.
A sincere thanks to Mayor Bob Buckhorn and the City of Tampa for “rising up” and accepting President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper City Challenge and for charging Safe & Sound Hillsborough to be the platform for accomplishing MBK Alliance goals, specifically, the goal of ensuring all youth remain safe from violent crime.
“I’m excited to be a part of this inaugural event that brings like-minded individuals together to discuss solutions and strategies for the problems that plague our boys and young men of color,” said Freddy Barton, MBK Tampa Coordinator. “It is an honor to represent the Tampa Bay area and while we still have much work to accomplish, I look forward to sharing many great successes that Safe & Sound Hillsborough has had in our efforts to reduce violence, bring people together and provide positive pathways for our youth.”
Launched in February 2014 by President Obama, My Brother’s Keeper addresses persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color and works to ensure that all youth can reach their full potential. In 2015, the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBK Alliance) was launched to scale and sustain the mission and in late 2017, MBK Alliance became an initiative of the Obama Foundation focused on building safe and supportive communities for boys and young men of color where they feel valued and have clear pathways of opportunities.
The invitation only MBK Rising begins with a Day of Service and Community Dinner on Monday, February 18 followed by two full days of mainstage sessions, breakout sessions, and evening events. Participants will learn from an incredible line-up of speakers including 44th President of the United States Barack Obama, Golden State Warriors NBA Champion Stephen Curry, Grammy Award winning singer and song-writer John Legend, and many others.
The main stage sessions of the convening will be livestreamed on Tuesday, February 19 at 6 p.m. ET and Wednesday, February 20 at 12:30 p.m. ET. Join the conversation and sign up to watch by visiting www.obama.org.
